Sorry Sven, this is all you've got!

Sven Goran Eriksson concluded his first day at Manchester City yesterday by telling the club's prospective new owners that the first-team squad needs a complete overhaul in order to become competitive in the Premiership.

Eriksson oversaw a double training session with the players he inherited from Stuart Pearce yesterday — even though he is not yet officially the club's new manager.

And it is understood that the Swede has already reached the conclusion that there will have to be major comings and goings if City are not to become involved in another relegation scrap this coming season.

With Middlesbrough striker Ayegbeni Yakubu the name on the top of the list of targets he discussed with City chief executive Alistair Mackintosh yesterday and current reserve goalkeeper Nicky Weaver on his way to Charlton, Eriksson has already put the wheels in motion as he looks to reshape City's squad.

It is also understood that he will investigate the possibility of bringing Shaun Wright-Phillips back from Chelsea and listen to offers for strikers Bernardo Corradi and Paul Dickov.

Midfielders such as Ousmane Dabo and Didi Hamann are also under threat. The former England manager feels that City's squad is physically inadequate for the Premiership and lacks genuine pace.

The 59-year-old arrived at City's Carrington training base yesterday at 9am and immediately addressed the first-team squad and held a private chat with captain Richard Dunne.

He then oversaw a fitness session in the morning before watching the players work out in City's indoor gym.

Last night former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra had taken his holding in the club to 73 per cent, needing just two per cent to take the club into private ownership.

Eriksson will then be free to sign his three-year deal and speak for the first time to the media.

He will be the 12th man to take over the reins at City since Sir Alex Ferguson became Manchester United manager in 1986. And Eriksson will hope to restore his reputation tainted by England's 2006 World Cup failure.
