Spanish authorities warn Real over Ronaldo but Fifa let them off the hook

By JOHN EDWARDS

Real Madrid have been reprimanded by their own authorities over their relentless pursuit of Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

Though FIFA announced yesterday there would be no formal action against Real following a complaint from United, the Spanish giants were left in little doubt they should tread carefully after appearing to conduct a public campaign to lure Ronaldo away from Old Trafford.

Spanish booty? Not yet, and Real have been ticked off about their pursuit of Ronaldo

A lack of evidence prevented world
football’s governing body imposing
any sanctions but they instructed
the Spanish Federation to warn
Real about their future conduct.

Real may think they are off the
hook but United chiefs feel a marker has been put down over the
Spanish champions’ media-driven
bid to sign last season’s Barclays
Premier League top scorer.

The consequences of inducing
Ronaldo to break his United
contract were spelled out to the
Bernabeu board, even though FIFA
admitted they could not prove any
wrongdoing.

In a statement, FIFA said: ‘From the
documentation received, no
breach of contract appears to have
occurred yet. The Spanish Football
Federation has been informed of
the complaint and asked to remind
its member club about the
potential legal consequences of a
breach of contract.’
