Spurs, Arsenal, Villa warned off Hoops stars

Peter Lawwell last night warned Europe's top clubs to keep their hands off Celtic's star duo Shunsuke Nakamura and Artur Boruc.

Japanese international Nakamura is a target for Tottenham Hotspur as the London club seek to break into the Far Eastern marketplace, while Poland goalkeeper Boruc has been heavily linked with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Lazio.

Going nowhere: Lawwell is keen for Nakamura to stay at Parkhead

Parkhead chief executive Lawwell acknowledged that increased Champions League exposure has made his players prime targets for major clubs but insisted Celtic are in the market to buy, rather than sell.

Attempts by Spurs to establish a price for Nakamura have been discouraged, while Arsenal were forced to turn to Boruc's international understudy, Lukasz Fabianski, when they received no encouragement from Glasgow.

Lawwell said: "Boruc has a contract until 2009, with an option for another year, while Naka has next year and we have an option for another 12 months.

"They are under contract and we are not sellers. Both of them are key for Gordon Strachan and are not in our plans to sell."

As he unveiled new £4.5million signing Scott Brown, Lawwell played down suggestions that underperforming, high-profile midfielders Thomas Gravesen and Jiri Jarosik will be sacrificed to make way for new arrivals.

Skipper Neil Lennon has already left the club and Lawwell insisted: "There will be no pressure to lose players. We know where we want to be in terms of strengthening."

Delighted to have claimed his top target, manager Strachan admitted that further acquisitions are in the pipeline.

"The scouting staff are working extremely hard and we know where we want to go next," he said. "It's now a case of seeing if we can bring the targets to the club. A lot will depend on circumstances and finances but the board are trying their best.

Number one: Artur Boruc was a stand-out performer for Celtic last season

"At this time of year, you are usually shattered and want your holiday. However, I'm looking forward to the first day's training - which has surprised my family.

"I can't put a figure on how many players I want to bring in. It might be feasible to get one - we might get two or three.

"You can't get the perfect squad, but getting Scott in is a good start. We have shown this year, no matter what anyone says , that we have a right good squad."

Brown is expected to enhance Strachan's options after Celtic's year-long pursuit of the Hibs youngster ended successfully.

"There are a lot of things I like about Scott," said Strachan. "He has a determination about him and is going to get better. I don't think the fee is a big problem. If you look at the British market, then this was a very good bit of business."
