Spurs boss just had to be pushed, says Davids

Edgar Davids today claimed Martin Jol was to blame for Tottenham's early-season slump — leaving the club with little alternative but to sack him.

The Dutch midfielder, who made 44 appearances for Spurs before joining Ajax in January, believes the club have not progressed since his acrimonious departure from White Hart Lane.

Davids was brought to Spurs by his countryman Jol

"My view on Tottenham is quite clear," he said. "I know the team and they are a very talented side. If you have all that talent then you have to perform.

"Maybe the structure is wrong at the club, but if the team has this ability and is not performing then the first area you are going to look at in correcting that is the manager. That's a fact."

Davids, speaking at the launch of a New Era headwear range dedicated to supporting MONTA'S Street Soccer tour, added: "When I was there, we were playing European football and finishing fifth in the league.

"Now, it doesn't look like they'll achieve that league position this season so they have not progressed as they would have hoped."

Former Spurs boss David Pleat believes Jol was placed in an impossible position after club officials were spotted meeting with Sevilla coach Juande Ramos.

Pleat said: "I think he lost his heart after the situation was exposed in the press where the Spurs directors went to Seville. I think that was a tragic day for Tottenham."

Former Spurs defender Graham Roberts believes whoever comes in must sort out the defensive problems at the club. Roberts said: "If they keep clean sheets they will win games because they have the talent as a team."
