Spurs fear Defoe will do 'a Sol'

Jermain Defoe could be the first high-profile casualty of the boardroomconflict with Martin Jol after the Tottenham manager admitted that he could be sold.

Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday that the pair are barely speaking after they clashed in the dressing room following Tottenham's 4-0 victory over Derby last Saturday.

Ultimatum: Jermain Defoe

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who also held showdown talks with Paul Robinson yesterday after he branded the board 'ridiculous', wants Defoe to commit his long-term future to the club.

Defoe has less than two years left on his contract and refuses to negotiate an extension while Jol remains at the club.

Jol said: 'Jermain's the only problem because he is not signing the contract. He is the only player who doesn't want to. 'Somebody said to me — and it wasn't a fan — "Why didn't you bring him on at half-time (against Derby)?" This is not a kindergarten.

'Everyone else is committed. I am committed. He tells everyone he loves the club, so sign a contract. As for the rest, I don't know what can happen to him — there are other clubs.

'The chairman told me a couple of weeks ago: "I don't want another Sol Campbell on my hands", and I know what he means.

'We have made a good offer. You love Spurs, we love you and we need four strikers. But he did not do that and he will not even discuss it. If he commits to the club, I said to him: "You will have your fair chance all of the time".'

Defoe was given just 15 minutes against Derby and vented his frustration at Jol after the game, feeling he is last in the pecking order behind Dimitar Berbatov, club record signing Darren Bent and new captain Robbie Keane.

Jol said: 'It's not a friendly game. It's a tough business.'
