Spurs midfielder O'Hara says England Under-21 call-up is icing on the cake

Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara says his call-up to the England Under-21 squad is the icing on the cake to what has been an 'amazing' last two months of his career.

O'Hara, 21, made his first-team debut in December, and has since gone on to make 12 appearances for the club this season.

O'Hara: performances for Spurs have won him call-up to England Under-21s

His impressive performances have earned him a place in Stuart Pearce's squad to face Republic of Ireland Under-21s at Southampton on Tuesday evening, and now O'Hara is hoping this is just the beginning.

He told the Spurswebsite tottenhamhotspur.com: "I'm amazed and it's a great honour for me to represent England again. I haven't done so since Under-18 level.

"It's been an incredible month or so. I've played the best four or five teams in England, all at their stadiums, and it's been a great experience.

"I just want to keep it going now, I don't want to rest on my laurels, and keep progressing as a player."

O'Hara represented his country at Under-16, 17 and 18 levels earlier in his career, so he is delighted to have made a further step up.

His inclusion in the latest squad will give him the chance to renew some old acquaintances, as well as join up with Spurs team-mates Tom Huddlestone and Aaron Lennon.

He added: "I played a lot of competitive games for England at younger levels and I loved it because playing for your country is a massive thing.

"I've always wanted to play for England at the highest level, and the Under-21s is a big step up, so it's a massive achievement for me and all my family are proud.

"I know Mark Noble and Steven Taylor from previous England squads and I was really good mates with them.

"It will be good to meet up with them again and I was speaking to Mark the other day about how well he's been doing.

"It will be good to see some old faces as well as making new friends. But it will also be good to go in with Tom and Aaron who have plenty of experience with England.

"If I can keep doing well for Spurs, hopefully I can continue to be involved with England and put myself in the frame for the Under-21 tournament next summer."
