Spurs new boy Modric can be Premier League star, says Pompey's Kranjcar
10 June 2008
Luka Modric has won the seal of Premier League approval from a Croatian player who has already made his mark in England.
Portsmouth winger Niko Kranjcar watched new Tottenham midfielder Modric score Croatia's winner against Austria on Sunday, and then predicted that he can drive his new club to success.
"I really do think he has got everything and the potential to have a lot of success," said Krancjar. "You need things to go your way and to have a bit of luck, but he has every single component to make it in the Premier League."
Off and running: Luka Modric celebrates his penalty for Croatia against hosts Austria on Sunday
Modric is slight in stature but has energy and power and Krancjar, who won the FA Cup with Portsmouth, believes Modric can repeat the success enjoyed by Cesc Fabregas at Spurs' north London neighbours Arsenal.
"Fabregas also looks very slight, but he runs the game for Arsenal and I really do think Luka is going to impress in the Premier League as well.
Kranjcar: Modric can have "the same success at Spurs that Fabregas has had at Arsenal"
"His style will suit Tottenham. Spurs have a Spanish manager and with the way they play and the players they have, I think the club will suit him perfectly – especially at home. I'm sure Tottenham know exactly what they've got and why they bought him."
Slaven Bilic, the Croatia coach, claimed that his country were overwhelmed by the atmosphere but Modric was calmness personified as he converted the early penalty.
"Of course he was calm, he scored it. That's the kind of character Luka is, people will see a lot of good things from him. Hopefully, he will be very good and I believe he could be one of the stars of the tournament. I will try to help him become that."
Krancjar added: "Getting the win was the only positive from the game.
"We dominated in the first half and had total control of the game, but we didn't score the second goal, which was probably important in terms of finishing the game off.
"In the second half, we invited Austria back into the game and we let the dominate high up the pitch. We did not have control of the game, but, luckily, we went off as winners."
Modric, who speaks little English, said: "I am very happy to score and I hope we can get to the quarter-finals. I am very excited to get to London and it is great to know the Spurs fans are excited."
