But in the wake of Sunday's victory over Chelsea at Wembley Berbatov, 27, dropped his biggest hint yet that he is prepared to stay at White Hart lane as long as Tottenham's ambition matches his own.
The club are ready to up his £40,000-a-week wage packet by a further £20,000, putting him alongside skipper Ledley King, Robbie Keane and Jonathan Woodgate in the pay stakes.

Tottenham are in no hurry to tie up a deal, however, given that Berbatov is under contract until 2010.
Significantly, they also hold an option to extend it by a further two years, ruling out any need to cut their £30million asking price.
That said, the Spurs board are ready to recognise Berbatov's outstanding contribution over the past 18 months and are determined that money will not be a reason for him having his head turned.
Although Spurs have rejected their local council's offer of an opentop bus parade, the club will show off the Carling Cup to fans ahead of next Thursday's UEFA Cup last 16 first leg at home to PSV Eindhoven. There will by a civic reception hosted by Haringey council.
