Spurs target Ramos meets his match at Emirates

Cesc Fabregas helped get Arsenal's Champions League charge off to a flying start with a 3-0 victory over Sevilla last night.

The Arsenal midfielder needed the help of a deflection from Sevilla left back Julien Escude in the first half, with Robin van Persie and Eduardo da Silva pouncing on a Wes Brown cross to head home in the 62nd minute.

Sevilla, who have won two successive UEFA Cups under their much-admired coach Juande Ramos, are thought to be the biggest threat to Arsenal's qualification, but Arsene Wenger's side are already sitting pretty at the top of Group H.

Ramos, courted by Tottenham after the north London club's disastrous start to the season, was hoping to enchance his reputation by securing at least a point at the Emirates Stadium, but he learned a painful lesson in the club's first ever Champions League group game.

Arsenal are old hands in this competition and the controlled manner of their victory suggested they should be able to breeze past Steaua Bucharest and Slavia Prague to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Wenger's side are determined to make up for last season's early exit against PSV Eindhoven and they put their marker down on the competition with victory in their opening group game.

Sevilla promised to be tough opponents after their UEFA Cup exploits, but the Champions League is another step up for Ramos's side.

They have won their opening two matches of the Spanish League season, but came up against a team with ambitions both domestically and in Europe this season.

Arsenal are top of the Premier League after their unbeaten start to the campaign, but they have unfinished business in the Champions League after losing the final against Barcelona in 2006.

Fabregas scored in each leg of their preliminary round tie against Sparta Prague and he continued his fine run in front of goal in the first half.

The Arsenal midfielder, who also scored in the 3-1 victory over north London neighbours Tottenham last Saturday, added another to his portfolio with the help of a huge deflection.

Van Persie added another when Fabregas's free-kick was helped on by the head of Bacary Sagna and Van Persie applied the finishing touch inside the six-yard box.

Da Silva wrapped up the win in injury time.
