Spurs want James to replace Robinson

Tottenham want David James to replace out-of-form Paul Robinson - the man the Portsmouth goalkeeper ousted from the England team.

The 37-year-old James is enjoying a renaissance at club and international level, having been snapped up for £1.2million from Manchester City in August 2006.

Tempting: David James

Manager Harry Redknapp has described him as "the best goalkeeper I have ever worked with".

For that reason Redknapp will hope to persuade James to sign another deal when his current one expires at the end of this season, but a lucrative move to Spurs could be tempting.

Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson has lost his place to Czech Radek Cerny, who has since had his own problems.

Cerny was responsible for the embarrassing clanger which allowed his former club Slavia Prague to pull a goal back in Spurs' 2-1 UEFA Cup win last week.
