Stephen Maguire's on track despite police probe

Stephen Maguire beat Jamie Burnett to reach the second round of the World Snooker Championship and denied the police probe into their match last year had affected him.

The Glaswegian was interviewed by Strathclyde Police last week after their economic crime unit opened an investigation into the result of his December clash against his fellow Scot at the UK Championship.

But world No2 Maguire shrugged that aside as he beat Burnett 10-5 last night to secure his place in the second round at The Crucible, where Mark King will be his next opponent.

"I'm just here to play snooker," said Maguire. "I don't read much of what's going on. I'm distracted by nothing. I've been practising hard. Practice has gone well and it's paid off in the first match."

Burnett refused to comment on the police investigation. The World Snooker Association have been conducting their own inquiry into Maguire's 9-3 victory last year after it emerged a spate of bets had been placed on such a result. Both players have denied any wrong-doing.
