Stevie blames UEFA for finals fiasco

Steven Gerrard accused UEFA of blundering over their choice of venue for the Champions League final yesterday as Liverpool mounted an impassioned defence of their under-fire fans.

The Liverpool skipper led the backlash against Europe's governing body after their spokesman William Gaillard branded Anfield fans the most troublesome under their jurisdiction.

Tarnished reputation: A scene that painted Liverpool fans in a bad light in Athens

Gaillard claimed there had been 25 Liverpool-related incidents since 2003, adding that "some were small, others more worrisome", but he was taken to task by Gerrard and Sports Minister Richard Caborn, who is due to discuss the matter with UEFA president Michel Platini today.

Huyton-born Gerrard reflected on eight years as a firm favourite among Liverpool followers and said: "It upsets me, because we have travelled everywhere together and their behaviour has been fantastic.

"I had friends and family at the final and their opinion was that the organisation was not good enough. The European Cup final has got to be in a bigger stadium with better organisation."

Caborn accused UEFA of "playing the blame game" as he waited for a report on how scores of Liverpool supporters with genuine tickets were denied entry to last month's Athens defeat by AC Milan after fans holding forgeries forced their way in.

"This is not about UEFA versus Liverpool or UEFA versus England fans," he said. "UEFA must stop pointing fingers at people. It is about finding solutions and trying to stop it happening again.

"I have given this message to Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry this morning and I will be giving the same message to Michel Platini."

Parry also voiced his disapproval, insisting: "The shortcomings in the management of the situation in Athens were apparent to anyone who was there."
