Stevie: Capello has made me into a better player

Steven Gerrard today thanked Fabio Capello for helping to transform him as a player since he took over as England manager 15 months ago.

The Liverpool captain is ready to sign a new contract at Liverpool that will keep him on Merseyside for the rest of his career.

The 28-year-old has two years left on his current deal but wants to stay at Anfield and continue working with Rafa Benitez.

Gerrard believes the Spaniard is now getting the best out of him, but also thinks Capello has made him a better player.

He said: "My relationship with Fabio since he came in has been really good. I've had dialogue with him all the time about how to get the best out of me.

"I'm sure I can have a good relationship with him and I think my form can be similar to that of my club. I think since he came in my form has improved for England."

Gerrard insisted he is just as focused on firing England to World Cup glory as he is trying to help Liverpool win their first title for 19 years this season.

He is back on international duty this week after missing England's last two friendlies through injury and already has one eye on next year's World Cup. The midfielder has been accused of putting club before country when he has pulled out of the England set-up before, but he said: "My desire to win something with England is the same as my ambition to win the title with Liverpool this season.

"When we've been knocked out of tournaments the hurt is exactly the same as when you don't achieve something with your club. I have many more ambitions left for club and country."
