Stevie G is the best player in the world, insists Liverpool's star striker Fernando Torres

Liverpool go into the match that will make or break their season against Inter Milan tonight with the world's greatest player in their midfield, according to star striker Fernando Torres.

The Spain international has hailed his team-mate and skipper Steven Gerrard as 'unbelievable' and reckons the Reds captain is probably the best footballer on the planet.

Liverpool, currently fourth on goal difference in the Barclays Premier League table and out of the FA Cup, take a 2-0 lead to the San Siro for their Champions League second leg and the 23-year-old goal machine thinks Gerrard, picked as Fabio Capello's first England captain, can only get better.

Given a more free roaming role from manager Rafa Benitez, Gerrard is relishing playing just behind Torres and has bagged 19 goals so far this season.

Torres, nicknamed El Nino (The Kid), said: "I knew Stevie was a great player before I arrived at Anfield.

"But playing alongside him has opened my eyes to how good he really is. He is a great passer and he can score goals.

"He is unbelievable. The best player in the world. And he is only going to get better."

Torres, who is the Anfield club's record signing at £26million, is currently Liverpool's top scorer with 25 goals and reckons that playing with Gerrard can only improve his game.

He added: "I am always happy to play with great players and if you play with someone like Steve it can only help your game.

"I was happy with my own performance against Newcastle and a lot of that is because I am enjoying playing with Stevie.

"I think he is comfortable with me also and now we have to try and play like this all the time.

"We need to make sure we stay in the top four so we need to keep on winning.

"Every game now is important in the league and in the Champions League so whether I score or Stevie scores, it is winning that is the main thing."
