Straight-talking Mowbray gives Kiely promotion feeling

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Dean Kiely aims to repay manager Tony Mowbray's straight talking by proving again that he is a promotion specialist.

Kiely was disillusioned when his reward for helping to keep Portsmouth in the Premiership in 2005-06 was for Harry Redknapp to sign David James and loan him out to Luton.

Thumbs up: As always, Tony Mowbray is keen to be heard

But one conversation with Mowbray in January convinced him that The Hawthorns was the right place to revive his career and his brilliant display in the first leg of the 3-2 playoff semi-final win over Wolves helped Albion to an aggregate 4-2 success which took them into tomorrow's showpiece final against Derby at Wembley.

It was at the old stadium that Kiely, 36,won his first promotion, saving a penalty in the 5-3 shootout win over Crewe which sent York up from Division Three in 1993. He was then part of the Bury team who went up as champions from Division Two in 1997 and completed the set when rising to the Premiership with Charlton in 2000.

And at West Bromwich, Kiely feels part of something special again.

He said: "I don't just want to be part of something for six months — because it turned out like that at Portsmouth. The wool was pulled over my eyes a little, but I was an experienced sticking plaster who could do a job in a very difficult time.

"Here the difference is I have the belief in the manager. The reason I came here over five or six other places was because the right things were being said. In football there are a lot of political manoeuverings and people are sometimes not straightforward, and I don't like that. If someone is honest, open, genuine and straightforward, that is refreshing. If you see that in a manager you respond to it."

Mowbray may seem to be the opposite of his more extrovert Derby counterpart, Billy Davies, but he said: "Ultimately it comes down to winning. If you win you don't get criticised."
