Strauss scores 50 again as England head towards Second Test triumph

Andrew Strauss hit his third consecutive half-century of the npower Test series as England made a good start in their fourth-day run chase at Old Trafford.

Strauss was unbeaten on 55 in England's 129 for one midway through the morning session.

Having top-scored in a disappointing first-innings score of 202, left-hander Strauss got to 50 with an edged four off Iain O'Brien, the fourth of his innings.

Textbook technique: England's Andrew Strauss keeps an eye on the ball

England captain Michael Vaughan was 35 not out as the New Zealanders failed to separate the second-wicket stand in typically blustery conditions.

Not even a change of ball in the 32nd over - the fifth of the day - could bring about a change of fortune.

The first delivery with it flew off the outside edge of Strauss' bat and through the slips for four off O'Brien.

Vaughan struck a more convincing boundary in the next over, which cost Daniel Vettori 12 runs, with a classical extra-cover drive.

And New Zealand profligacy gave England a further leg-up when Strauss pushed into the off-side for a single off Vettori and gained four more to his name by virtue of wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum's shy at the stumps.
