Stressed-out Trescothick skips Somerset tour of Dubai

While Michael Vaughan's side were busy establishing a match-winning position in the second Test against New Zealand in Wellington, news reached them that their 32-year-old former opening batsman had pulled out of Somerset's pre-season tournament in the United Arab Emirates after a recurrence of his stress-related illness.
Staying home: Marcus Trescothick
Trescothick, whose wife Hayley had their second child recently, was due to take part in the ARCH Trophy alongside Lancashire, Sussex, Yorkshire, Essex and a team from the UAE. He had even checked in at Heathrow before deciding he could not make the trip.
The 12-day visit would have been his first overseas trip since quitting England's Ashes tour 15 months ago. The illness first struck when he was forced home from the 2006 tour to India.
Somerset chief executive Richard Gould said: "Marcus returned to Taunton to be with his family. We look forward to him playing a full part in our season.
"Shadows of his old problem are still there but he sensed things were not right and took the decision not to risk a deterioration in the Middle East. He will be back in training next week. He hasn't suffered a major relapse."
Trescothick spent last year rebuilding his career with Somerset, making 1,000 runs in a Championship season for the first time as he helped the county gain promotion to Division One.
Somerset coaching director Brian Rose, who is scheduled to meet Trescothick in Taunton tomorrow, added: "At the moment, all Marcus wants to do is to enjoy his family life and play for Somerset. Playing for England again is not part of the scenario."
Last night, his England colleagues in New Zealand were coming to terms with the news of his latest setback.
Paul Collingwood summed up the mood when he said: "It's really sad. We just want him to get himself right."
