Stretcher-case Dida will face UEFA judges after his Parkhead dramatics

UEFA were preparing to throw the book at AC Milan keeper Dida following his farcical reaction when a fan 'slapped' him during Celtic's Champions League triumph last week.

Europe's governing body have announced formal charges against the Brazilian after the Italian giants failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for stretchering Dida from the Parkhead pitch after Scott McDonald's last-minute winner.

After being lightly slapped, Dida initially gave chase to the fan, 27-year-old Robert McHendry, before falling theatrically to the ground.

He was then carried off on a stretcher while holding an ice pack to his face, before being replaced by Zeljko Kalac for the dying stages of Milan's 2-1 defeat.

The charges against player and club relate to UEFA rules under which 'member associations, clubs, as well as their players, officials and members, shall conduct themselves according to the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship'.

Celtic already face proceedings over a breakdown in organisation and their failure to maintain full control of the crowd.

UEFA have informed Sportsmail, however, that Milan's defence of Dida's actions will have no bearing on the punishment the Scottish champions receive. Celtic will receive the minimum of a heavy fine and a warning concerning the future conduct of fans, amidst concerns that the angry Rossoneri might utilise their power at Europe's top table to turn the spotlight firmly in the Glasgow club's direction.

UEFA's director of communications, William Gaillard, last night told Sportsmail: "The disciplinary body asked for an explanation from Milan for the reasons behind Dida's substitution. They were not satisfied with what they received, so the player has now been charged.

"But this is a completely separate issue from the situation with Celtic and the supporter. Both issues will be considered in isolation."

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admits the 34-year-old goalkeeper was wrong to react as he did but denies the player deserves a Champions League ban or fine.

He insisted: "During the years, Dida has shown great sportsmanship and fairness - he was also hit by flares and got up. The other night was a mistake.

"I don't know why he did it but I think that the issue must be closed for all the demonstration of professionalism he gave through the years.

"The fact that he came off was an evaluation which the doctor made."

Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has also reacted to Celtic chairman Brian Quinn's comments regarding Dida's 'antics'.

The outgoing chairman will today officially open Celtic's new training complex in Lennoxtown but will try to avoid further questions on the issue.
