Striker fear for Allardyce

Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce admits he is powerless to keep Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins at St James' Park for next season.

Owen has a £9million release clause in his contract while Arsenal may be the first to challenge the £13m get-out written into Martins' contract when he joined from Inter Milan for £10m last season.

Allardyce says it could be three games into the season before he knows for certain who is staying.

He said: "We are left in a precarious position. I'm going to plan for Michael and Obafemi to start the season here but at some point between now and the end of August, I might lose those players. That would be a massive blow for me and this football club.

"If those clauses are invoked, there's nothing we can do."

Allardyce will begin imposing his style on his squad on Monday at the start of pre-season training, with a week-long trip to Austria to follow.
