Owen has scored six goals in his last six games, breathing life into his Newcastle career after two-and-a-half seasons riddled with injury problems.
Chairman Chris Mort is eager to open discussions and manager Kevin Keegan already believes has persuaded the 28-year-old England forward.

But Owen, whose current salary is worth around £5million a year, said: "It's very hard to be a player in this situation. There are so many others who've been in a similar position, but they don't get asked the question as much.
"The situation is that the manager said to me about 10 or 12 days ago that he wants me to stay, he told me what type of player he's going for in the summer and what he thought we needed and his vision for the club.
"It's all fantastic to hear and fantastic stuff but it's just been the manager and he said then that the chairman would get in touch with my advisor over the coming weeks.
"It's not me putting pressure on, but he hasn't yet, so there's nothing really more to say. I presume the season will finish in a couple of weeks and then we'll get in touch with me and talk over the summer.
"It's probably a question you need ask the powers that be here. That's not me putting pressure on, because I've been in these situations many times before." Owen's Newcastle team-mate Oba Martins has also yet to agree to a new deal at St James' Park. His advisors have been in talks with the Newcastle board and a deal is close to completion.
It will, however, not include a clause that would allow the Nigerian to leave if a set offer is tabled.
The contract Martins signed when he moved from Inter Milan two years ago would have allowed the player to leave if a bid of £11 million had been put forward.
Martins has made ambiguous noises about his future and has become frustrated at being substituted by Keegan, refusing to shake his manager's hand in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland on Sunday.
However, his representatives believe that if a couple of small points in his new deal can be clarified, he is ready to sign a new deal that could be worth up to £90,000-a-week.
