Sturrock return ruined as Spurr's strike hands Wednesday a draw

The Hillsborough faithful had barely stopped applauding Paul Sturrock last night when his Plymouth side snatched a quick lead. Thankfully for the home fans, Tommy Spurr's late, long-range hit rescued a draw.

Former Wednesday boss Sturrock remains a popular figure in the blue half of Sheffield after winning promotion from League One.

Lucky strike: Peter Halmosi (far right) enjoys his first-minute free-kick success

But even he could not have foreseen such a dramatic start.

There was less than a minute on the clock when Peter Halmosi's free-kick from 25 yards took a looping deflection off the defensive wall and left goalkeeper Lee Grant wrong-footed.

Wednesday went on to miss a string of clear chances with Jermaine Johnson and Ben Sahar creating openings from either flank.

Early on, Deon Burton turned the ball wide from Johnson's cross when it seemed easier to score, and then saw goalkeeper Luke McCormick hack the ball clear as he threatened to go round him.

Johnson was also narrowly off-target with two well-struck shots, and Sahar just failed to chip McCormick, but Adam Bolder was the chief culprit.

Indecision cost Bolder as he raced clear and chose to square a weak pass instead of going for goal, and he later miscued horribly from 10 yards.

Midway through the second half, Jermaine Easter was twice denied by Grant.

Burton came closest to levelling matters for Wednesday, before left-back Spurr controlled on his chest and struck in from 30 yards in the 81st minute.
