Sunderland chief Quinn confident of keeping Chelsea-linked Roy

Niall Quinn has vowed to fight off any approach from Chelsea if they move for  Roy Keane as Avram Grant’s replacement.

Keane has been mentioned as a shock successor following two seasons in charge  at Sunderland that have included an unexpected league title in the Championship  and consolidation in the Barclays Premier League.

The former Manchester United captain has just 12 months left on his existing  contract at the Stadium of Light and that is causing unease within the  corridors of power at Sunderland.

Talks over an extension are due to start soon, with Quinn prepared to make Keane one of the best paid managers in England on around £3 million-a-year and  he reiterated his belief that Keane will sign.

“I’m pretty happy at this stage that he'll be with us for a long time to come,”  said the Sunderland chairman.

“I'm not overly surprised that Roy has been linked. Rather than fret about it,  I'd take it as a positive that we must be doing something right as a football  club.

"Remember, Roy is still under contract at Sunderland for next season.”
