Mackem fans' player of the season chipped a bone in his wrist after getting in the way of a fierce Philippe Senderos drive in yesterday's home defeat to Arsenal.

He missed the 'lap of appreciation' after the final whistle because he was in hospital.

Jones, who was also the Trinidad and Tobago player of the season, was a definite starter in the prestigious sell-out match with England on Sunday June 1 which promises to be a memorable footballing celebration on the island of Trinidad.

But Sunderland manager Roy Keane confirmed: "He will need a plaster cast so he'll be out for six weeks. We are disappointed with the injury but it is fortunate for us that it has come at this time. It's one of those things. All I can say is he must have really weak wrists."

Jones's Sunderland team-mate Dwight Yorke is making a one-off comeback to play in the England game and he is guaranteed a memorable and emotional welcome as the greatest overseas star from the Caribbean.

Fresh in his memory will be the warm ovation from Sunderland supporters as he departed after 75 minutes on his return to the first team at the Stadium of Light.

As the most experienced player in his squad, who is still able to have an influence, many will be hoping it was not a farewell. He may only really be appreciated when he has gone.

Keane said: "We saw the best of Yorkie today. The system with one upfront suits him. He got a good ovation from the supporters, I think they appreciate what he's done for the club. We'll sit down over the next few days and decide what the future holds for him."

In fact Keane's former Manchester United team-mate flew to his homeland last night, denying Keane the opportunity to meet the 34-year-old face-to-face for one last time and again persuade him to stay on Wearside.

Yorke, who has just had a baby daughter, has several offers from Australia, Dubai and Championship clubs but Keane is hoping a coaching role, and one final season in the English top flight, albeit as an infrequent but valuable participant, will be enough to extend his stay.
