Manchester City manager Eriksson revealed last night that Richards will not return to training for at least six weeks after a cartilage operation and warned the 19-year-old defender he must be patient.

The former England coach said: 'He's very keen to play again this season because he wants to play for us, as well as his country, but we can't rush him back. It's a collaboration between the physios, the doctors, himself and myself, but you don't take any risks with Micah Richards.

'He's 19 and he's going to be crucial to us for the next five years he's contracted to us, so there's no chance he will play beforeit's safe for him to do so.

'He's a strong guy so it might be difficult to hold him back, but it's very much up to the doctors and specialists to decide when he can play.'

Richards' absence will allow Croatia's Vedran Corluka to regain his starting place as City host Wigan in the teatime kick-off today.
