Just what has Sven Goran Eriksson let himself in for this time?
Sacked by Manchester City on Monday, the Swede was in San Diego 48 hours later to run the rule over his new players as Mexico’s incoming manager.
This was a side that finished second in last year’s North American Gold Cup, third in the Copa America – now facing Argentina in front of a crowd of mainly Mexicans in the United States as a reprise of the game of the tournament at the last World Cup.

But Sven was shown the full extent of Mexico’s problems – with the help of Leo Messi and his team-mates’ brilliance – as Argentina romped to a 4-1 victory.
The world’s No 1-ranked team scored three times in the opening half hour through Nicolas Burdisso, Messi and Maxi Rodriguez.
New role: Sven Goran Eriksson shows his new colours
Brazil-born midfielder Zinha hit back for Mexico just after the hour mark but highly rated Atletico Madrid Sergio Aguero killed off any hopes of a comeback with 18 minutes to play.
Aguero is thought to be engaged to Diego Maradona’s daughter Gianina and some of the magic is clearly rubbing off on the 20-year-old.
But Messi’s goal was the pick of the bunch, with the Barcelona striker starting and finishing an excellent team move.
