Sven's plea over Samaras return

Sven Goran Eriksson will throw Georgios Samaras upon the mercy of the Manchester City supporters who shattered his confidence last season.

Samaras is in the squad to face Norwich in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night, the first time the 22-year-old Greece striker has been in contention for a first-team place this season.

Samaras could be given a rare chance to impress

Eriksson has asked the City fans to give Samaras a chance after hearing that he became a scapegoat during the struggles of last season.

The City manager said: 'I have heard about the booing. Of course that will have affected him. I imagine it was the frustration but I hope it is over now. If you're playing at home and the public decide they don't like you it is hard.

'I hope the supporters will see him as one of our important players and treat him well.'

Samaras is some way down the pecking order under Eriksson, even with Valeri Bojinov injured. He is likely to start on the bench with Italian Rolando Bianchi given a start up front.

England Under 21 international Joe Hart will replace Kasper Schmeichel in goal.
