Swansea No2 arrested after 'Rovers player headbutted'

Swansea City assistant manager Graeme Jones has been arrested following an alleged head-butt on Bristol Rovers' Danny Coles after a running verbal battle exploded into violence.

The 38-year-old was questioned but was later bailed after the incident in the tunnel which followed the League One clash at the Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bailed: Graeme Jones

Sources say that Jones, who had earlier been involved in a touchline rumpus that ended with Swans' sub Febian Brandy being sent off by referee Uriah Rennie, had exchanged words with Coles during the game.

But the fracas broke out en route to the dressing rooms at the final whistle.

A Swansea insider said: "They had both been going at it when the match was on. In the tunnel, Coles said: 'Let's see how big a man you are now?'

"And then it all kicked off. People from both sides were wading in and Coles has been left with a cut under a black eye."

The defender refused to speak when asked about the bust-up but Rovers coach Paul Trollope said: "Danny has a bloodied lip and, as far as we are concerned, the blame was all on one side. By all accounts, he was on the end of a headbutt from a member of Swansea's staff.

"The police are investigating and came to our dressing room afterwards. The incident was witnessed by other players and a number of stewards.

"I can't say whether we will be taking action as a club at this stage. We will be awaiting the result of the police investigation."

Injured: Danny Coles

Bristol Rovers' safety officer Dave Harper added: "There was an incident in the tunnel involving players and staff from both sides. The referee did not see it but he has been made fully aware of what went on. It was quite heated."

A Swansea statement read: "The club can confirm that an incident occurred in the tunnel after the game at the Memorial Stadium involving players and staff from both sides.

"Assistant manager Graeme Jones was involved but, after being questioned by the Avon and Somerset Police, was released last night pending further investigations.

"Graeme and the club have co-operated fully with the police over the matter."
