Sweet revenge - England paying the price for jelly bean jape

England stand accused of contributing to their inevitable defeat against India at Trent Bridge today after their chief tormentor claimed that a prank of throwing jelly beans on the wicket had left him feeling "insulted".

On an acrimonious day which ended with India paceman Sri Sreesanth being fined half his match fee for barging into England captain and centurion Michael Vaughan, Zaheer Khan took five wickets to leave his side on the brink of taking a 1-0 series lead.

The tourists closed the fourth day of the second npower Test on 10 without loss, requiring just 63 more runs for victory.

Zaheer, meanwhile, claimed a flare-up while he was batting on Sunday evening had provided the motivation for his heroics. He had waved his bat angrily at Kevin Pietersen after repeatedly finding sweets in front of him on the pitch, although he did not know who was responsible.

"There were some jelly beans on the crease, so I just moved one off the wicket," he said. "But when I played the next ball, there were some more on the wicket. Obviously someone was chucking them from behind, which I didn't like, so I went up to them and said: 'What is this all about, I am here to play cricket'. They came at me and I was upset about it, so I reacted accordingly. Maybe I picked the wrong player but I wasn't really bothered because I just felt it was insulting.

"When I go on to the cricket field, I am serious and this incident definitely inspired me to do well."

Sreesanth was fined about &1,300 after admitting a charge brought against him by the umpires relating to "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players".

Match referee Ranjan Madugalle, who conducted the hearing, said: "Cricket is a non-contact sport and any deviation from that fact is completely unacceptable. I am pleased Sreesanth accepted he was in the wrong by pleading guilty and that he apologised."

England tried in vain to make light of the jelly bean incident, with Paul Collingwood, who scored a half-century, saying: "He wasn't too pleased. I think he prefers the blue ones to the pink ones!"
