Swimmer Hardy's set to appeal

American swimmer Jessica Hardy has begun the appeal process against her failed drug test at this month's US Olympic trials and still hopes to compete in Beijing.

Hardy tested positive for the stimulant clenbuterol on 4 July immediately after her swim in the 100 metres freestyle.

However, her first test, after the 100m breaststroke three days earlier, and a third, following the 50m freestyle on 6 July, both came back negative.

Hardy denies any doping violation and claims she had not even heard of clenbuterol until she was informed of the positive test.

The 21-year-old qualified for Olympic selection in the 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. A first-time doping offence usually results in a two-year ban.
