Symonds tried to defuse Bollyline row face-to-face

Andrew Symonds went to India's dressing room and sorted out Harbhajan Singh's "monkey" jibe man-to-man, according to reports in Australia today.

And the Birmingham-born batsman, 32, who declined the chance to play for England a decade ago, was unhappy when the matter was reported to match referee Mike Procter after the second Test in Sydney last week.

Singh was later banned for three games and the stormy "Bollyline" series against the Indians was nearly called off.

India captain Anil Kumble said: "I asked if it could be sorted out between us but it went to the referee. I thought this would spiral into a larger issue."

The Indians suspended their tour while they appealed against Singh's ban - but after umpire Steve Bucknor was removed from next week's third Test in Perth, the tour resumed while Singh's appeal is pending.

The Indians started their three-day tour match in Canberra against Australian Capital Territory this morning where they declared on 325-9 at the Manuka Oval.

ACT were 10-0 at the close.
