Tariq takes Jersey honours

Tariq got trainer Peter Chapple-Hyam back in the Royal Ascot winner's enclosure with an authoritative success in the Jersey Stakes.

The French raider US Ranger had been all the rage in the ring beforehand and was sent off the 6-5 favourite for Jean-Claude Rouget.

When he hit the front a furlong out punters must have thought it was a matter of how far he would win, but Jimmy Fortune always had the move covered on board Tariq.

He left US Ranger trailing in his wake and ran out an impressive two-and-a-half-length winner, with Sir Michael Stoute's Arabian Gleam claiming third.

Fortune added: "They went a good gallop and he relaxed for most of the race.

"When this horse does it he's very good."

Rouget was disappointed not to have won, but was nonetheless still happy with his charge.

He said: "It is no disaster not to win but I'm disappointed as I hoped to have a Royal Ascot winner.

"The pace was good for him and he came to win but the other horse (Tariq) swept past him and he must be very good.

"I'll probably keep him to seven furlongs or maybe even shorter for the rest of the season.

"I'm not sure exactly where he'll run next but the July Cup and the Prix Maurice de Gheest would be likely options."

Noseda said: "I was delighted with that. It was the third run of his life and the first on turf. He is an improving type and hopefully he will develop into a solid horse in the future."
