Tartan Bearer gives Stoute a Derby boost after winning York's Dante Stakes

Tartan Bearer has powered into the Derby picture as ante-post favourite Twice Over exited stage left at York yesterday.

A head victory from Frozen Fire in the Dante Stakes under Ryan Moore propelled Sir Michael Stoute's colt into 5-1 favouritism for the Epsom Classic in some books.

But the non-staying third for Twice Over in the 10-furlong contest had a disconsolate Henry Cecil predicting a drop back in trip for the colt, who had missed the 2,000 Guineas to concentrate on the Derby. Stoute now has three potential shots at a fifth win at Epsom. He will also run Dee Stakes winner Tajaaweed while his Khaled Abdullah-owned Chester Vase hero Doctor Fremantle could be supplemented after the demise of the Twice Over, who races in the same colours. Of Tartan Bearer, who only won a Leicester maiden last month, he enthused: 'I am entitled to be very hopeful. I think he goes to the Derby with a solid chance.' With bookies in a spin, Casual Conquest, who is not certain to run, Curtain Call and Tartan Bearer can all claim to be the Derby favourite in at least one book.
