Taunting Fergie puts the boot into Sven's cloggers

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Sven Goran Eriksson's Manchester City will try to kick their way to victory against his United team on Sunday.

Ferguson and Eriksson will share an English touchline for the first time in their careers tomorrow as City attempt to extend their Premier League lead over their rivals to seven points in one of the most eagerly awaited Manchester derbies for years.

Asked if City would employ the same physical approach that he has complained of in the past, Ferguson said: 'Yes, I think it will be the same. It's up to the referee [Mark Clattenburg] to be strong. Derby games with City always see them with a point to prove. Their fans get them up.

'Last season they had all these blue and white flags. The club spent a fortune on them. And they never had a shot at goal. They never tried to beat us. It was amazing.

'We were going there to win the League but they were quite happy.

'They have lost some of the players traditionally acquainted with the club, such as Joey Barton and Sylvain Distin, but derby games are derby games. Their fans will be wound up for it, you know.'

Ferguson also suggested that the game at the City of Manchester Stadium will be the home club's biggest of the season while claiming his own team will have 'other challenges' ahead.

But new City boss Eriksson said: 'No, I won't tell our players to go out and kick United. That's not our tactics. And I don't think we have a team that will concentrate on that.

'We will concentrate on playing football because that is our strength. But we will be ready.

'If you are a player and you are not up for the game at 1.30pm on Sunday, then you shouldn't be playing.

'It's a huge game. I don't think I need to shout at the players for two or three days before the derby.

'This is what they have been working towards all their careers, what they have dreamed about. All the players we have know the importance of this game.'

United will be without the injured Wayne Rooney and the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, while it has emerged that Owen Hargreaves is still struggling with knee trouble. But French striker Louis Saha has an outside chance of making it.
