Taylor answers the call from Newcastle owner Ashley

Steven Taylor has revealed he is close to agreeing a new contract at Newcastle after a personal intervention by owner Mike Ashley.

Ashley showed his intention to be more hands-on following the departure of  Chris Mort by personally contacting the England Under-21 captain and offering  an assurance that he would be offered parity with James Milner and Charles N’Zogbia — both on £1.5m-a-year.

Taylor has just 12 months left on his existing contract and feared he was being forced out before the call came.

He said: ‘Knowing the owner wants me to stay means a lot to me.

‘Everyone knows I love this club and I want to commit my future here, but the deal has to be right for me, and the club. I hope everything’s sorted out soon.’
