TENNIS: Keothavong overcomes Mirza as she continues her rise up rankings

Anne Keothavong is certain to improve her world ranking of 82 after reaching the last 16 at the Bank of West Classic in California.

The British No1, who lost to eventual champion Venus Williams at Wimbledon last month, reached the second round in Stanford last night with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over India's Sania Mirza.

Keothavong had to get through qualifying to reach the main draw but proved too strong for Mirza, who was the beaten finalist last year and is 49 places higher in the rankings.

The 24-year-old Londoner will now face sixth seed Marion Bartoli.
