Teofilo shunned

Confidence in the 2,000 Guineas favourite Teofilo appeared shot to pieces last night.

Punters were reluctant to accept trainer Jim Bolger's assurances that he would have his unbeaten colt fit and firing for the first colt's Classic on May 5 after he confirmed it was an injury that had sent shockwaves through ante-post betting on Monday.

Guineas sponsors Stan James eased the colt to 2-1 (from 6-4) and cut leading rival Dutch Art half a point to 9-2.

French hope US Ranger, owned by Michael Tabor, was the colt for money with Ladbrokes cutting him to 5-1 from 8s.

Neil Morrice, the spokesman for Stan James, said: "When a horse suffers a training reverse this close to his objective, his price can only go one way, regardless of the optimistic noises from connections.

"Any confidence behind him has completely dried up and the most likely scenario is that he will continue to slide over the period of his enforced holiday."

Totesport described Teofilo as "friendless" as all the major firms lengthened his Guineas odds.

Jim Bolger says Teofilo is 'still on course' for his tilt at the 2,000 Guineas

William Hill, however, did report support for Teofilo's Derby bid on June 2, a target which allows him considerably more recuperation time.

Bolger said: "Teofilo has had a training setback. When trotted yesterday afternoon he showed slight discomfort. As a result, his training will be restricted to walking and swimming for one week.

"Otherwise, he is fit and well and on target for his 2,000 Guineas tilt."

Ante-post Guineas backers have already been hit by the decision to retire Holy Roman Emperor to stud.
