Terry in cheat row: Morientes claims JT tried to hurt him as skipper is cleared to play

Fernando Morientes today accused John Terry of cheating by targeting his injured shoulder the last time they met.

The Valencia striker will come up against Chelsea's captain tonight with the defender wearing a mask in the Champions League tie to protect his fractured cheekbone.

Morientes has raised the stakes by claiming Terry singled out him and defender Raul Albiol during their European quarter-final last season. The Spaniards have been talking about getting revenge for losing that game and it must be a concern they could copy the methods they have accused Terry of using.

England's skipper will be furious at suggestions he would try to hurt another professional.

But Morientes's claim on Spanish radio will increase the ill-feeling for the already highly pressured Group B game at the Mestalla.

The former Liverpool striker said: "I have not had good experiences with Terry. Last season he knew I had an injured shoulder and from the beginning of the game tried to make contact in that area to cause me damage. Albiol had an injured hand and in several actions twisted it.

"It seemed they knew very well the problems we had and were saying 'we know that you are injured and where it hurts to you'."

Joe Cole today defended his captain and insisted: "We are a clean side and we want to go out and play football. I do not want to get into talking about any Valencia players."

Terry came through a full training session last night when he tested out his transparent protective mask for the first time and it seems there is nothing that could stop him playing.

And despite Morientes's criticism, the Spaniard still admires Terry. He said: "I am convinced wearing a mask will make no difference to him."

But former England manager Graham Taylor believes it is a risk. He said: "John is a centre-half and he's got to head the ball and there will be elbows about. Personally I'd be concerned."
