Test prop Thackray given leave to exit Leeds

Jamie Thackray, one of Leeds Rhinos' Great Britain Test props, wants a move and has been told he can leave. Thackray, 28, is unsettled after being on the bench 24 times in Super League last season and with no guarantee that there will be any greater opportunity under new coach Brian McClennan.

McClennan said: 'Jamie is re-assessing where he wants to go with his career.

'I have had an honest discussion with him about how he can improve and where he ranks among our props.

'He is concerned he might not get the number of games he would like and is looking at his options.

'He has asked if he can talk to other clubs and we are open to that because we don't want to hinder his career. 'He is still one of the best line-breaking props in Super League but we are pretty healthy in that department.'

Leeds-born Thackray, who started his professional career with Hunslet a decade ago, helped Hull to beat Leeds in the 2005 Challenge Cup Final and joined them midway through the 2006 season.

He has featured in all three of Leeds' pre-season friendlies so far but was not with the rest of the squad at yesterday's media day at Headingley Carnegie. McClennan, who took over as coach from Australian Tony Smith, will play a full strength side in skipper Kevin Sinfield's testimonial against Oldham on Sunday.

'They haven't been told they have to play — they all want to for Kevin,' said McClennan.

'It shows how much respect they have for him.'
