The folly of Colly: Quite frankly, this just isn't cricket

Paul Collingwood's suitability as England's one-day captain was in question last night after an incident that shamed the game during their one-wicket last-ball defeat by New Zealand at The Oval.

Collingwood insisted on running out Grant Elliott even though Ryan Sidebottom collided with him, leaving the Kiwi grounded.

Umpire Mark Benson failed to persuade Collingwood to withdraw his appeal, sparking furious protests from New Zealand who went on to grab two runs off the final ball for victory.

Collingwood later apologised and added: 'I made the wrong decision. It's something I'll have to live with.'
