Villa interest: Robbie Keane
Keane has become the Midlands club's top target after plans for a £7m bid to lure Craig Bellamy away from Liverpool were rejected by the Anfield club.
But Villa will find it just as hard to sign Keane, who has forged a potent relationship with Dimitar Berbatov in Tottenham's well-balanced attack.
Portsmouth will lead the pack chasing Wales international Jason Koumas if West Brom fail to clinch promotion to the Premiership.
The classy midfielder, who spent a year on loan at Cardiff last season, is also interesting Everton and Charlton.
Norway international Kristofer Haestad insists he will be a success in the Premiership despite cancelling his loan spell at Wigan by mutual consent after only a couple of months at the JJB Stadium.
He is already heading back to IFK Start with a ringing endorsement from Latics manager Paul Jewell, who said: "I cannot fault anything in Kristofer's character and commitment, which has always been first class but I think he found it difficult to adjust to the demands of the Premiership. Everyone at the club wishes him all the best for the future."
And Haestad added: "I enjoyed coming to England and obviously I'm a bit disappointed. But working under Paul Jewell was a good experience for me and I would love to have another chance to come to England in the future."
Bolton are willing to use Israel defender Tal Ben Haim as bait to land Liverpool's Australian midfielder Harry Kewell.
The 28-year-old, who cost £5million when he signed from Leeds United, has struggled with injuries for much of his career.
Kewell is also interesting Manchester City but Bolton want to sign him in the summer when they will also be making a move for Wigan forward Henri Camara.
United States defender Gooch Onyewu has seven games to win a long-term contract with Newcastle United.
The centre-half is on loan from Standard Liege and wants to stay at St James Park and insisted: "I'd definitely like to be here next year.
"I've settled in well with my team-mates and I am quite happy. This is a situation and place I'd like to be in come next season.
"Newcastle are a great club and it's a great city. I think I can learn a lot from the coach Glenn Roeder. I have to think optimistically and think that things will work out. It depends if the coach picks me, of course, because more players are coming back from injury.
"That means he has a lot more options for his line-up. I just have to continue trying to impress him and hopefully it will be enough."
Rumour of the day: Manchester City want to sign Southend striker Freddy Eastwood.
No chance: Ronaldinho will not be moving to the Premiership or Serie A after pledging to stay at Barcelona.
