The Screamer - It's the talk of football

Controversial Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is to join Sunderland on loan until the end of the season — despite offers from Wigan, Birmingham and Sheffield United.

Evans, who was 20 on Wednesday, was arrested last month over an allegation of rape at United's Christmas party — an accusation he denies — and has been bailed until February 23.

On the move: Evans

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson has warned the defender about his behaviour and believes Sunderland, under former United captain Roy Keane, is the best place for him to progress.

Keane, who still hopes to tie down a deal for Blackburn midfielder Robbie Savage and Reading's Stephen Hunt, had Northern Ireland international Evans on loan last season.

Ferguson has yet to decide on other proposals for Phil Bardsley, on loan at Sheffield United, or from Sunderland again for Danny Simpson.

Paul Scholes says he is on course to return at the end of the month.

The United midfielder has started running again after spending more than two months on the sidelines following knee ligament surgery.

He said: "Everything seems to be OK."

Everton have confirmed a £1.5m deal to sign Plymouth Argyle's Dan Gosling. Sportsmail revealed last month that Everton were keen on Gosling, 17, who can play in defence and midfield. Everton manager David Moyes said: "He is one for the future."

Steve Bruce will appoint Nigel Spink as Wigan's new goalkeeping coach after Gary Walsh left to join Paul Jewell at Derby. Former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert has also arrived on a two-day trial at Derby, whose manager Paul Jewell said: "We are going to have a look at him and find out whether he is right for us." Derby defender Andy Griffin is wanted by Stoke to replace right-back Stephen Wright, recalled from his loan spell by Sunderland.

Jens Lehmann looks to have lost out on a move back to Borussia Dortmund after demanding £40,000 a week. The Arsenal keeper's old club wanted him to replace injured Roman Weidenfeller and sent director of football Michael Zorc to open talks with the Gunners, as revealed in Sportsmail. But while Arsenal were prepared to let Lehmann go, having preferred to play Manuel Almunia for most of this season, Dortmund say they cannot afford the £3million over 18 months that the 38- year-old is asking for.

Blackburn have rejected a Manchester City approach for striker Roque Santa Cruz, who has 10 League goals since his summer move from Bayern Munich. Rovers boss Mark Hughes is ready to off-load another forward, Jason Roberts, but has taken Levski Sofia striker Valeri Domovchiyski, 21, on a fiveday trial.

Alan Curbishley has warned Dean Ashton he is unlikely to be handed a starting place when West Ham take on the top teams. The striker has expressed his disappointment at being left out against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal in recent weeks, but Curbishley does not want to alter his policy of playing a lone striker against the leading teams. He said: "Carlton Cole is suited best to that role when there's a lot of work to be done."
