The Screamer - It's the talk of football

Newcastle have dismissed as 'ludicrous' the claims that boss Sam Allardyce's job is under threat.

Although billionaire owner Mike Ashley was he England Under 21 full-back has had limited oportunities and Moyes, who will lfurious with his team's embarrassing 4-1 home defeat by Portsmouth, he has every intention of standing by his manager.

But the angry reaction of Newcastle supporters has heaped further pressure on him before next weekend's derby match at Sunderland Chairman Chris Mort refused to respond to reports that Allardyce is now facing the axe and Ashley has barely spoken at all since he bought the club just after Allardyce's appointment in May.

But a club insider said: "Two weeks ago we'd had our best start to a Premiership season for 10 years and then we lose two matches, albeit quite badly.

"It just doesn't make any sense at all."

Everton boss David Moyes is interested in Arsenal defender Justin Hoyte.

Tose Joseph Yobo to Nigeria for the African Nations Cup in January, wants to increase his defensive options.

Chelsea have been made 3-1 favourites to retain the Carling Cup.

They play Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals, Arsenal go to Blackburn and Manchester City host Tottenham, all in the week beginning December 17.

West Ham are at home to Everton in the previous week.

Sir Alex Ferguson has called for tougher rules on agents.

He said: "Agents have come to us many times before and they give you a transfer fee that they want.

"It's not directly linked to anything — and the figure is in millions.

"Agents need to be regulated in a far stricter way than they have been in the past."
