The Screamer... It's the talk of football

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson has apologised to Gareth Southgate for handing him the manager's job last summer, and insisted he has done an excellent job in his first year of management.

The former Boro skipper was handed the job after it was turned down by Terry Venables and Martin O'Neill, but Gibson says he was the right man to lead the club following Steve McClaren's departure for England.

Owed a debt of gratitude: Chairman says Gareth Southgate should have been given an apology

Gibson, who met Southgate this week to discuss summer targets, said: "We handed Gareth a poisoned chalice last summer, there's no doubt about that, but I'm delighted with what he's achieved. In some ways we owe him an apology as a club, because we've asked an awful lot of him.

"He took the job at a difficult moment in our history, with an ageing squad and after a very difficult season, but he's taken all that in his stride. We're very proud of him.

"We looked around at who was available on the managerial front, but after thinking long and hard about it and talking to various people, I felt that the answer was right underneath my nose. It was a very brave decision and I think he's learned a hell of a lot this year."
