The Screamer... It's the talk of football

Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins has pledged his future to the club as he recovers from an attack on his car by masked gunmen in Nigeria.

Martins' future at St James' Park has been in doubt, despite the 17 league and UEFA Cup goals in his debut Premiership season.

The 22-year-old, who cost £10million from Inter Milan last summer, has attracted interest from Juventus but he says he is happy on Tyneside.

The striker claimed gunmen tried to kill him in Lagos, 48 hours after he helped Nigeria qualify for the African Nations Cup Finals.

Gilles Grimandi is close to accepting an offer to take over David Dein's former role at Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has asked his ex-player to be a buffer between him and the board. Grimandi would also be in charge of negotiating transfers and contracts.

Arsenal boss Wenger was given the option of choosing a replacement for Dein in a bid to keep him at the club.

There were fears Wenger would walk out when his ally was forced to quit in April over his support for a takeover.

Charlton manager Alan Pardew has made his fourth summer signing with the capture of France Under 21 captain Yassin Moutaouakil.

The 20-year-old right back cost £400,000 from French second division side Chateauroux.

His arrival could signal the departure of Luke Young, who is wanted by Middlesbrough, Newcastle and West Ham. Charlton value Young at £5million.

Wigan will sign rebel Preston goalkeeper Carlo Nash to provide competition for Chris Kirkland.

Nash, 33, had a loan spell at the JJB Stadium last season following a row with Preston manager Paul Simpson.

The Premier League will carry out stringent checks on new Manchester City owner Thaksin Shinawatra that could include specially hired investigators sifting through his business background.

Offences under League regulations that would rule him out as a fit and proper' person to control City include theft, fraud and counterfeiting.

Premier League spokesman Dan Johnson said: "There is a schedule of offences and any new owner is subject to scrutiny."
