Newcastle have been spared a £1.6million payment to former forward Albert Luque in a Spanish court.

Luque cost Newcastle £10m when he moved from Deportivo la Coruna in 2005. However, as part of his contract with Deportivo, the player claimed he was owed 15 per cent of the fee or £1.6m. Both clubs fought the case, insisting the other side had to pay, and Judge Manuel Carballo Garcia found for Luque but decreed that Deportivo would meet the cost. Luque started only six Premier League games in two years with Newcastle.

Sunderland plan a move for Southampton's Andrew Surman in the summer. Boss Roy Keane is preparing a £1m offer after receiving good reports on him, but is likely to face competition for the midfielder, who is 21. New Southampton manager Nigel Pearson will try to hold on to Surman, who has played for England Under-21s.

Blacburn Rovers have offered 'keepyuppy' maestro Alex Marrow a contract until the end of the season. The 17-year- old midfielder, a part-time plasterer, has already played for Blackburn's U18s and earned a 20-minute run-out in the reserve team victory over Manchester United last Thursday. Marrow was handed his chance after winning a competition last month.

Mark Robins has sounded the rallying cry for Rotherham who face administration and a ten-point penalty for the second time in two years if they cannot find new owners in six weeks. Robins said: 'Last time there was a siege mentality and that's what you want.'

Plymouth have signed Derby's Gary Teale and Sunderland's Russell Anderson on loan. Teale's deal is until the end of the season while Anderson's is for a month. Championship rivals Hull want West Brom's Neil Clement on loan and are considering signing ex-QPR man John Curtis.
