The Screamer: It's the talk of football

Stewart Downing has admitted he has not yet signed a new five-year contract at Middlesbrough. The deal appeared to have been concluded last week after a bitter war of words between Steve Gibson and Ian Elliott, Downing's agent.

The England winger, a long-time target of Spurs, said: 'The contract is all agreed but there are still some things to iron out. It should be done any time this week.'

He added: 'You can get unsettled because there is a lot of talk. I'm glad it's out of the way and I know where I'm going to be playing my football.

'I think the team is on the up. That's what the manager has said and there are players he is going to bring in.'

BIRMINGHAM OWNERS UP STAKE IN CLUB

Birmingham co-owners David Sullivan and the Gold brothers, chairman David and Ralph, have increased their stake in the club to almost 50 per cent.

Sullivan spent £574,000 to increase his holding to 24.45 per cent and the Golds splashed out £895,000 to take their stake to 25.06 per cent.

It is another blow to the takeover ambitions of the club's largest individual shareholder, Carson Yeung.
