The Screamer... It's the talk of football

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni faces a struggle to convince Stephen Ireland to return to international football.

Trapattoni has named the Manchester City midfielder in a provisional 40-man squad for friendlies against Serbia and Colombia next month.

The Italian plans to visit Ireland at City's training HQ but it is understood Ireland, 21, still has major issues about playing for his country.

City manager Sven Goran Eriksson has also repeatedly stressed to Ireland that he thinks he should return, outlining the benefits he feels it will have on his career.

Eriksson said last night: "I have spoken to Trapattoni about it and I know how much he wants Stephen and how much he wants to come here and speak to him. I think Stephen wants to talk to him, too."

Sources close to the player have revealed that Ireland has never got over the row he had with former coach Brian Kerr when he was part of the Under-19 set-up and that he is "scared" of representing his country.

Eriksson feels it is essential for the player's development that he plays again at that level.

Gunners track Gomes

Arsenal are tracking PSV Eindhoven's highly-rated Brazil goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

Arsene Wenger has been searching for a high-class keeper for some time and chief scout Steve Rowley watched Gomes in the UEFA Cup against Fiorentina on Thursday.

Ipswich duo in crash scare

Ipswich chairman David Sheepshanks and manager Jim Magilton were recovering at their homes yesterday after being treated in hospital for superficial injuries following a car crash in Essex.

Sheepshanks and Magilton were being driven back to Ipswich on Thursday night when the smash happened. One of the cars involved caught fire. Sheepshanks said: "We were all very lucky."

Warnock's worrying

Neil Warnock fears former club Sheffield United could emerge from the chasing pack to endanger Crystal Palace's Premier League ambitions.

Warnock watched his old team maintain their play-off hopes with a draw in the Sheffield derby, a result that put Kevin Blackwell's men five points behind sixth-placed Palace.

Blackwell, who must see off Burnley's challenge at Turf Moor today, said: "Neil told me that as a Blade he wanted us to beat Wednesday. But from a professional point of view he was glad we didn't because clubs like his are wary of us."
