German legend Franz Beckenbauer believes Michael Ballack should have joined Manchester United instead of Chelsea.
Ballack, 30, was back in his homeland yesterday for an X-ray on an injured ankle — an injury which has prompted Chelsea to omit him from their Champions League squad.

Ballack: Nowhere to go
And Bayern Munich president Beckenbauer said: "I think it was a mistake to move to Chelsea.
"There was a space available for his position with Manchester United and he would have fitted into their system perfectly."
Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster claimed Ballack was only prevented from moving to Spain this summer because of an agent's fee, but Beckenbauer added: "Where can he move to now?
"I hardly suppose Madrid are interested after bringing in Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder."
MORE GRIEF FOR STYLES
Referee Rob Styles faces more humiliation after being charged by the FA with a "technical irregularity" for appearing to show two yellow cards to Michael Essien during last month's clash between Liverpool and Chelsea but not sending him off.
Styles was taken off the Premier League list for week after he mistakenly awarded Chelsea a penalty in the game at Anfield.
The latest charge over the Essien mix-up is for what FA sources describe as "sloppy refereeing".
O'NEILL OFF THE HOOK
Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill will not be charged by the FA over his altercation with referee Steve Bennett last month.
O'Neill argued with Bennett as the official left the field at halftime during Villa's 2-1 win over Fulham and later publicly apologised for an outburst for which he was sent to the stands.
Referees are bemused that the FA have not charged O'Neill for misconduct because they have no direct evidence.
They believe the FA should take their word as gospel. But the FA say they believe the sending-off was sufficient.
