The top 10 most horrendous misses in football

10 Darren Bent, Tottenham v Portsmouth
Darren Bent has surely sentenced himself to the subs' bench for the remainder of the year ... or a transfer after this staggering howler. Harry Redknapp said he couldn't understand how he had put it wide. If any Premier League clubs still want Bent, Redknapp will probably accept two bags of cheese and onion crisps and a Mars bar for him now.
9 Amr Zaki, Manchester City v Wigan
Is it too early to call miss-of-the-season? Probably not. Amr Zaki made Darren Bent's wayward header look like a reasonable effort when he launched the ball high and wide over the Manchester City crossbar. On the plus side, Chris Kamara loved it.
8 Ryan Giggs, Manchester United v Arsenal
Illustrated here as Alex Ferguson's worst ever moment, the United manager could only watch as Ryan Giggs took it past David Seamen before opting to shoot with his weaker right peg. Low and behold, he boomed it over.
7 Nwankwo Kanu, West Bromich Albion v Middlesbrough
Popping up at the back post you'd probably bet your house on Kanu finding the net with an open goal. Oh dear. The offending article is 38 seconds into this this montage.
6 Diego Forlan, Juventus v Manchester United
Forlan was one of Sir Alex Ferguson's least successful strikers. Put simply, he just couldn't score. Here he shows why.
5 Thomas Rosicky, Arsenal v CSKA Moscow
When presented with an open goal Rosicky managed to pass the ball directly to the opposition keeper - who was lying next to the post. What makes this even worse is that the shot is actually going miles wide when it rolls into the keeper's arms. Final score 0-0
4 Peter van Vossen, Celtic v Rangers
Ask any Celtic fan what a "van Vossen" is and they will cackle with glee. Here is a first class howler, right out of the very top draw.
3 Ronny Rosenthal, Aston Villa v Liverpool
The stuff that nightmares are made of. Rosenthal performed the mother of all misses against Villa, when, having beaten Nigel Spink, and then having a touch to steady himself, he somehow hit the cross bar with the goal at his mercy.
2 Cristiano Ronaldo, Sheffield United v Manchester United
He may be the world player of the year, but even Ronaldo can bungle with the best of them. Had he converted this chance, it would surely have been the easiest goal of his career. As it turned it out, it was easily his worst miss.
1 Chris Iwelumo, Scotland v Norway
Footballers never forget their international debuts, although Chris Iwelumo will wish he could after this horrendous finish at Hampden last year. The Stoke City reject somehow blazed the ball wide from two yards out, much to the amazement of every man, woman and child in Scotland. You only have to look at his face to know he has just missed the sitter of the century.
