Thompson on target to ease the pressure on Cardiff boss Jones

Steve Thompson continued his quest to keep Dave Jones in a job by earning Cardiff a first win at Bloomfield Road since 1968.

The striker's spectacular goal was his third in four games and gave under-pressure boss Jones just a sixth victory in 30 Championship matches.

Blackpool started with confidence after Saturday's 1-0 win at local rivals Preston, and with Keigan Parker's pace unsettling Cardiff, chances were created and winger Andy Welsh brought two fine saves from Kasper Schmeichel.

So it was completely against the run of play when Thompson struck.

Cardiff's Scottish striker turned quickly before unleashing an unstoppable 25-yard shot the flew past Paul Rachubka.

Having taken an undeserved lead, Cardiff had two chances to double it, but Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink spurned both.

After a terrible back header, the Dutchman skewed a shot well wide and, when Michael Jackson slipped, he drilled an effort straight at Rachubka.

Blackpool then had an even better opportunity with Parker again the provider, picking out strike partner Ben Burgess. But the target man thumped his shot past both Schmeichel and his far post.

The on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper was called into action by Stephen Crainey in the second half.

Crainey's dipping shot was well parried as Cardiff hung on for a second win in four days.
